DESCRIPTION

The Economic Development Director serves as a key member of the city's executive team, responsible for driving economic growth, encouraging business development, and strengthening the community's competitive edge. This position encompasses strategic planning, proactive stakeholder engagement, and the execution of targeted initiatives that attract new investments, support existing businesses, and generate job opportunities. By prioritizing innovation, collaboration, and sustainable development, the Economic Development Director positions the city as a vibrant and attractive destination for businesses, residents, and visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Business Administration, Urban Planning, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in economic development, business development, public administration or related fields, including management and leadership roles. Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience in municipal government a plus.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License at time of placement.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Comprehensive understanding of economic development principles, practices, and strategies, including business attraction, retention, finance, and workforce development.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate staff, build consensus, and drive results.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage business leaders, government officials, and community representatives.
  • Knowledge of Chapter 380 economic development and municipal government programs.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to envision long-term goals, develop actionable plans, and adapt to changing economic conditions and market dynamics.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective partnerships with stakeholders, fostering collaboration and consensus to achieve shared goals.
  • Political acumen and diplomacy skills to navigate complex political environments and build support for economic development initiatives among elected officials and community leaders.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • With oversight of the LEDC Board of Directors, develop and implement comprehensive economic development strategies and initiatives aligned with the city's goals and objectives, including business attraction, retention, and expansion.
  • Collaborate with local businesses, industry associations, government agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations to foster partnerships and leverage resources for economic development projects.
  • Lead efforts to attract new businesses, industries, and investment to the city.
  • Provide support and assistance to existing businesses to facilitate expansion, retention, and workforce development initiatives.
  • Create opportunities for the redevelopment of underutilized properties, business parks, and commercial corridors.
  • Advocate for policies, regulations, and incentives that support economic development goals, including zoning changes, tax incentives, and infrastructure investments, to create a favorable business climate.
  • Collect, analyze, and disseminate economic data and market trends to inform decision-making, track performance metrics, and evaluate the effectiveness of economic development programs.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, allocate resources effectively, and ensure accountability and transparency in financial management practices.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations related to department goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
