Controls Engineer

SUMMARY:

 

The Controls Engineer will work with the maintenance team by providing day-to-day troubleshooting, programming, and technical support within the Rod Mill processing departments. Support includes installing new or modifying existing electrical control systems and apparatuses. 

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Troubleshoot equipment and process problems as required – multimeter-focused
  • Service, maintain, repair, install, and test equipment following current machine specifications
  • Modify programs on all PLC’s and HMI’s as required while maintaining version control on server shares
  • Create and modify electrical drawings, process & instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) and schematics as required
  • Procurement and ordering of spare components
  • Troubleshoot local machine networks for communication issues
  • Improve PMs when diagnosed through breakdowns or Continuous Improvement (CI)
  • Observe the functioning of installed equipment to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement
  • Install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, circuit-breakers, and starters in control panels
    • Proximity sensor I/O – analog devices & scaling – encoder addressing – pressure & level control devices – I/O link, etc.
  • Connect power and control cables to devices and motors

Assists production when needed;

 

Maintain work area to acceptable housekeeping standards;

 

Quality and productivity standards are expected to be met at all times;

 

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of the following software packages: Allen Bradley RSLogix 500, Studio 5000, Factory Talk View Studio, Panel Builder32, SEW MoviTools, AB Connected Components Workbench
  • Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot industrial networks:  Data Highway Plus, Remote I/O, EthernetIP
  • Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot machine safety circuits and applications:  AB, Siemens
  • Understanding of VFD, DC, and Servo Drives:  AB, ABB, SEW
  • Familiarity with NDT & Vision systems:  Keyence, Zumbach, Foerster
  • Understanding of Data Tracking and the use of Barcode Scanners (Keyence) or RFID (Turck)

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  

 

Electrical Engineering degree/diploma/certificate or Trades Qualification and significant equivalent work experience. 

 

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES                                                   

 

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to read schematics, ladder logic, and P&ID diagrams and work with 480 VAC three-phase and 4800 VAC circuits.
